Prayers and Thoughts Regarding Thankfulness

For each new morning with its light, for rest and shelter of the night, for health and food,  for love and friends, for everything Thy goodness sends.  -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Almighty and gracious Father, we give You thanks for the fruits of the earth in their season and for the labors of those who harvest them. Make us, we pray, faithful stewards of Your great bounty, for the provisions of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need, to the glory of Your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever, Amen. -Anglican Book of Common Prayer

god-1772560__340Though our mouths were full of song as the sea, and our tongues of exultation as the multitude of its waves, and our lips of praise as the wide-extended firmament; though our eyes shone with light like the sun and the moon, and our hands were spread forth like the eagles of heaven, and our feet were swift as hinds, we should still be unable to thank thee and bless thy name, O Lord our God and God of our Fathers, for one thousandth or one ten thousandth part of the bounties which thou has bestowed upon our fathers and upon us. -Nishmat Kol Chai (Hebrew Prayer, “The Soul of All Life”)

O God, we thank You for this earth, our home; for the wide sky and the blessed sun, for the salt sea and the running water, for the everlasting hills; and the never-resting winds, for trees and the common grass underfoot. We thank You for our senses by which we hear the songs of birds, and see the splendor of the summer fields, and taste of the autumn fruits, and rejoice in the feel of the snow, and smell the breath of the spring. Grant us a heart wide open to all this beauty; and save our souls from being so blind, that we pass unseeing when even the common thorn bush is aflame with Your glory, O God our Creator, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. -Walter Rauschenbusch
